Question:
How come most Gordon fans only like him this yr. because he's 1st in points and one of the better drivers?

If Gordon was 10th - 15th in points all year, wasn't winning, having more wrecks, and say Martin Truex, Jr. was 1st in points and the best driver during the year, would everyone suddenly become of fan of Truex just because he was currently on the top? I just think alot of people out there choose the top driver as their favorite and as soon as another driver is at the top, they suddenly become a fan of whoever it is at the top.

Because those fan who only the like driver currently top are pathetic and self centered. I see a few of them in this room everyday.

There are a lot of Gordon fans who have been fans for years. I have been a Gordon fan since 1997. And I was a fan when he went through his divorce and he was driving like crap.... It doesn't hurt that I am from California and Gordon was born in Vallejo.

For a lot of people their favorite driver is who they get to know by watching interviews, listening to commentators, and what other media they see. Gordon is on a lot of stuff and the topic of a lot of conversations.... so you get familar with him and either start to hate him or you love him. He is in your face all the time with the media. Gordon this or Gordon that... if he is running 25th they talk about why, if he is running 2nd, they talk about that.... if he is racing someone hard, they talk about that.... I think the same happens a bit for Dale Jr. He could be 31st and they talk about why he is struggling... then there was the DEI negotiations.... Gordon had his new wife and then his daughter..... popular and/or winning drivers get the spotlight and new and old fans get to know them. How often had you heard of Derrick Cope the last 3 years? He ran races since 1982-2006 and had 408 starts. He even tried to qualify this year at the Daytona 500 but didn't make it. He finished at an average of 26.2 in his career and even won 2 races. He had 4 other top 5 finishes. A guy like that doesn't make headlines and people don't talk about him.... even after racing 26 years. If they aren't being talked about, they don't become a person's favorite driver.

Gordon has a big fan base, wins races, pisses other drivers and fans off so he makes news, has had changes in his personal life, and is often debated about he compares to the legends.... this stuff sells and gets media time and great exposure to the public and that translates into more fans.

Every sport has it's "bandwagon" Fans, even NASCAR. I will tell you though, a majority of the Gordon Fans have been with Jeff through hell and high water. We endured the embarasement of his divorce due to infidelity and with all people the girl at Macy's make-up counter; the failure to make the Chase in 05; and let us not forget the 05 and 06 summer slumps. Yet, we still cheered and hoped. This is our moment and if some people want to join the party, well come on in.

I stopped caring about "Bandwagons" a long time ago, because it really doesn't matter. You can tell who the true fans are when they can remember the ugly times just as well as the wonderful time.

You got it all wrong. A true NASCAR fan would stick with their driver no matter what happens. Even if their driver is way down in the points, a true fan would stay with their driver. I will always stick with Jeff Gordon. I am a fan of his because he knows how to drive the wheels of a race car and can win races. I like that he is 1st in points, but that is not the reason why I am a fan of Jeff.

Most Gordon fans are not fly by nights or bandwagon fans. I have been a Jeff fan ever since he got into Cup racing. There are always going to be some fans like that, but most of Gordon's are die hard fans

As far as I know only the newbies switch back and forth with who's good a certain year and who's not. A true fan stays with there racer no matter what.

Besides you are aloud to root for other drivers even if they are not your favorite driver.

For the longest time when you went to a NASCAR race it seemed to be that just about everyone either had on Dale Sr., or Jeff G. stuff. And the 2 of them had 76% of the hat and shirt market.

I would think that those 76% are still big fans of these 2 guys even with the big guy gone, I know he will always be my favorite driver.

That sounds like a football or baseball question. The Gordon fans that I know are Gordon fans only. I wouldn't have thousands of dollars in Gordon stuff and bail.

GORDON HAS HAD MANY MORE FANS THAN MOST DRIVERS FOR 10 YEARS

I was a rusty fan until Penske decided to go Ford

I'd rather root for a Hyundai than a Ford.

When Jeff Gordon qualified in 6th for his first full time Cup race (daytona) and led the first lap, I said this kids a champion, and as the world has seen, he is.

He is the most sucessful active driver in Nascar.

Naturally there are those people out there that jump on the bandwagon every year with which ever driver is doing best. But, there are also those diehard fans who stick behind their drivers year after year no matter how good or bad they are doing. For instance, I have always been a Terry LaBonte fan right up to his retirement at Texas last year and was happy to see him drive at Sonoma. Yet, I have always admired Jeff Gordon for his abilities irregardless of if he was winning or not.

nahh...i think you have it all wrong i have been a jeff gordon fan since i was like 7 and im 15 now. and as you probably all know for being a Jeff Gordon fan you get a little teased but i mean i stood up for jeff even last year when it wasn't exactly his year. I mean i agree most of the new coming fans look to see whos on top and they choose them as their favorite...me i was just watching it one day with my dad **dale jr fan** ask who the 24 was told my dad i liked him and ive been a fan ever since. but as the new fans come to watch the race a little more i think they find out who their favorite is. :)

CAT D---Jeff Gordon didnt' have an affair with Ingrid they met on the set of Taxi which was filmed way after he and Brooke got a divorce. i just thought i would let you know :)

I am not a gordon fan but it looks like becuse he is 1st in points he is the fan fav that is not true. if you look at all the stuff like hats , shirts and all the stuff they sell at the races you would know who is the fan fav. That is DALE JR!!!!!!! He sells more than any driver and he does not have to be in 1st to be number one!!! He is the guy next door that we all want to be friends with. JR IS #1 IN MY HEART ALWAYS!!!!!

Most people do have a favorite driver, Jeff Gordon didn't do to well the last couple of years, but he had personal problems, but his life is devoted to racing, and he is doing much better now that he finally has a good supportive wife. He was a close friend of Dale Earnhardt #3, and Dale told him not to marry Brooke, but he did anyway, and look what happened, she never came to any races, so he had an affair and fell in love with Ingrid who is much better for him, and I have always been a big fan of Jeff Gordon, I have a collection of a lot of stuff, and going to the race is such a rush, not like watching it on TV, but is very addicting, and costly, but to answer your question, I really don't think that's why people like Jeff Gordon, they like him because he is the best driver, since Dale#3, If people like him because he is the leader, that is superficial, and they probably don't watch Nascar every week anyway.

Jeff Gordon is one of the most popular drivers in the sport. Most of his fans probably stick with him through thick and thin, just like the fans of any other driver. I don't see how you can measure how much the fans like him this year as opposed to last year. If it seems that people like him more this year, it's because he will obviously get more exposure since he's leading the points and thus possibly make it seem like he's more popular. Any yes, a good portion of NASCAR fans may root for who's doing well. This doesn't mean that they don't like their favorite driver any more. NASCAR has lots of drivers and just about everybody roots for more than just one driver.

In Nascar and any other sport you are going to have fans like that and it has not really changed, Jeff is doing well because he has a good team and because he is married and has a baby, and because he is not afraid of new challenges, most people hate seeing him on the track to be honest and that is their opinion but as long as the ones that are supporting him are supporting him then who cares about what other people think we are just letting them get in out way and and allowing them to upset us when we know what Jeff is like and we know how he got where he is and the fact he is really good this year

Jeff Gordon is a four time series champion and has 78 wins, he isn't "just good this year". Get a grasp of more than a week's history and you'd understand why Gordon has a lot of fans.

I agree with saq428 because everyone that starts watching the sport goes for dale jr. because they know who he is. I've been a jeff gordon fan for 13 years and i have never met someone become a fan of jeff gordon because he was on the top. But i'm sure it has happen.

Speaking for myself, I've been a fan of Gordon's for about 13 years. Oh, I'm sure there's some bandwagon fans of his, every successful athlete has those, but not me. I rooted for him when all the other guys were winning cups for the last 6 years.
2007-07-09 13:01:44 UTC
Some NASCAR fans are fickle like that. In every sport you will see fair weather fans. Personally, Jeff is just as much my favorite driver when he finishes 11th in points as he is when he finishes 1st. I like a lot of other drivers as well, but there is only one favorite.

Because the Championship form of Jeff Gordon has come back, he is running basically the same way he was running 10 years ago.

Where have you been, under a rock? You must be for asking such a dumb question. Every sport has front runners. Gordon, Stewart, Kenseth, Busch every driver that has won has had front running fans, Cowboys, Steelers, Yankees, Redsox, they all do. Obviously your just saying this because you hate Gordon. Crawl back under your rock and stop asking dumb questions.

I know a lot of people who like the driver thats winning at the time. My favorite is Kyle Busch. He is going to still be my favorite winning or losing.

he has a huge fan base and wherever he would be in the standings would still be his fans...whether you like him or not (not a fan here) you have to respect the talent

You've got it wrong. Most Junior fans are bandwagon fans who jumped ship when his dad, a far better driver, was killed at Daytona. Gordon fans are Gordon fans because he is the best active driver in Nascar right now. The numbers doen't lie. They would still be fans if he was not in first place right now.

Oh, and Fire Marshall Bill........prove me wrong about the Junior bandwagon!!! How often is the question about someone else and Junior Nation finds it in themselves to still bash Gordon? That seems to be fine, but turn it around on them, and oh no, we have a crisis on our hands. It's unAmerican to say bad things about Junior.
