Because NASCAR is an American racing series, just like CASCAR (Canadian Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) is a Canadian racing series. There are Stock car racing series throughout the world.

Not only Americans like Nascar... my family is the best example of people from different nationalities enjoying that sport. My mum is from England, my dad is from Spain, and I was born in Mexico, yet we all love it. My best friend is also British and he got into Nascar after attending only one race with me.
Just like many before me have answered... Nascar is a sport that is far from being meant for 'rednecks with low IQ's', just as some ignorant people put it. Nascar is a sport that requires alot of intelligence. I would just love for some soccer/baseball/football/basketball fan to sit along my side while watching a race & understand the strategies that the teams/drivers must come up with in order to win a race and then we'll see who has the lower IQ.
Nascar is a great sport that deserves far more respect than some naive people give it.

I think it's pretty obvious that the NASCAR haters got to this question first, the truth is that you just have to watch a race and see for yourself. Don't watch the whole thing at first, just the last 20 or so laps of it so you won't get bogged down with all the technical stuff. You can start to get into that after it piques your interest.
Now this is not directed at you, but for all the people who said that NASCAR is a sport that caters only to Southern white men, why don't you research all of the Fortune 500 companies that have invested heavily in NASCAR advertising, they don't think it's nearly as redneck as you do. And if you think about it, every week there are only 43 drivers racing during the big race of the weekend, in other sports such as football and baseball, there are about twice that many players on a team and multiple teams play every week. In NASCAR you not only have to be good, you have to be the best of the best. It's the Top Gun Flight School of sports and that is awesome to me. That's the best part of all.
If you ever in your life get the opportunity to go to a NASCAR race, do it! You will understand what no words could ever describe.

Probably because it is an American Sport. And it takes place in America! The rest of the world has not been exposed to it like we have been. It's kinda hard for an Aussie or European, or African or South American, Chinese or Russian to attend a race or even see it on TV. It's too bad, they just don't know what they are missing.

I believe many Americans have a fascination with fast cars & driver's ability to handle those cars. I think many Americans like it because it is an inherently American sport. It started in the South during prohibition with bootleggers building fast cars to outrun the authorities. So, they decided to race those cars they built & the rest, as they say, is history.

I like NASCAR because it appeals to me more than other sports such as soccer and golf. Sorry if I offended anyone but to me NASCAR is the best sport in the world and has the kindest, most giving athletes.

It's one of the few pure American sports. If the rest of the world doesn't like NASCAR, it's because they aren't exposed to it and don't understand it.
This American could care less who does or doesn't like it. It's their loss, not mine.

We are at every race they do, and Flock to MIS. Something like 25% of the people at MIS are us Canadians and they don't even advertise for it here in Canada.

i undersstand why poeple things it boring and lame however i find it interesting becasue there is a lot of strategy believe it or not. for example say there is 10 laps left and one car has very low fuel. the crew needs to do the math and find out if they have enough or if they should pit. true example one driver Tony Stewart was in first and this happened to him they calculated him to have just enough to finish. however on the last stretch on the last lap he ran out. he shut off his car and drifted across the finish line.. he still won. also if there is say 50 laps left and a car needs something they need to decide if they should pit now and be set for the rest of the race or hope there is a caution that comes out before the race is over. if they pit now and get laps behind and a caution comes out later theyre screwed. or if they wait and a caution never comes out theyre still screwed. more to it than most poeple think...

Different sports are popular in different countries.
Whatever is talked about a lot also seems to be the most popular. If people hear about it, they'll be more likely to wonder what all the fuss is about and see for themselves.

It's awesome.
And I'm sick of you calling people like me 'white male rednecks with low IQs who only watch for wrecks in hope that someone dies'.
1) I'm a GIRL
2) I'm half Hispanic/half White (look more like the latter)
3) I know some really intellegent fans (and drivers too)
4) There are drivers from CALIFORNIA, CONNETICUT, INDIANA, WISCONSIN, among other non-southern states. And just 'cause my favorite driver is from Georgia doesn't make him part of the stereotype either. David Ragan is one of the nicest and most intellegent drivers on the circuit today.
Some TROLLS just don't get it, do they.

Not all Americans like it. I prefer football or basketball. I'm more curious about the dynamics that go behind NASCAR vehicle designs. But then again, I am a border-line engineer.

I think Americans watch Nascar because:
1. They have nothing better to watch.
2. In 500 laps, there's probably going to be something interesting (like a crash, or one of the drivers running over a Coke can at 180 mph, which then flies into the fans and hits someone in the face).
However, I don't like watching it. If there's nothing else on, I might watch the first 5 laps or so, and then leave.

Not ALL americans like nascar.. trust me! I hate it... if you look at the type of people that actually watch nascar religously you would notice that the only reason that they actually like it is because it is easier to understand than football when you have downed enough beer to stock a full size bar. Most of the jokes that people say about americans being rednecks and just hunting and watching nascar is true in some places... like where i live... so ya it isn't all americans but an alarming majority

I am American and hate nascar, because there is no sport in it and it kills the thrill of a real race. Nascar has its roots here and is mainstreamed, so people know no better, and most have never been on a track themselves, save a few. The actual drivers that can drive, and who have competed in races outside of the oval nascar type races, everyone hates. They don't like a good driver. Which is crazy. And it is a racket, and everyone here loves a good racket.

I'm American and I hate it. I appreciate the behind the scenes much more, because it takes brains to get a car to perform in such a way. However, watching cars go around in a circle is simply boring and simple. Actually, all car racing sucks. It is as boring as watching golf.
P.S. I think most Americans don't like NASCAR. Thanks for generalizing.

you know you ask someone why they like nascar they say its because of
1. the cars go fast
2. the wrecks
on the premise alone instead of watching nascar people should just travel to cape canaveral and watch them launch the space shuttle. it goes a hell of alot faster than any automobile and its certain to blowup.
